love reading on my e-ink tablet. And I love email newsletters. But you know what I don't love? Scrolling through a newsletter on an e-ink screen. Scrolling isn't fun on e-ink, generally.

Most e-ink-friendly apps do away with scrolling by using page-turning (Pocket, Kindle) or tap-to-scroll (EinkBro, Wallabag).

But weirdly, there doesn't seem to be a mail client that supports those features. Someone make one please! I'd love to easily read my newsletters on my favorite screen!

If you use YouTube, It's not easy to miss a scammer in the comments in the videos of channels with high subscriber count.

The typical scam is to masquerade as the channel owner and enticing the unsuspecting users to engage with them for a prize to siphon money or steal their identity.

Several YouTubers have resorted to pin a comment on their videos mentioning about the scam and some have even gone to the lengths of engaging with the scammers themselves to educate their audience.

Given the scale of the scam and risk of legal issues/reputation loss to the YouTuber there seems to be a need-gap to address the YouTube comments scam as YouTube seems have waved their hands off this.

I've seen several talented software developers struck in writing code for legacy systems like Mainframe (or) maintaining old Java code. Many of them aspire to switch to a full-stack development career but don't know where to begin.

I believe its tough for them to adapt to new programming languages and technologies than someone who's new to programming and software development i.e those with an empty cup.

So there seems to be a need for specialized training routine which can prepare legacy software developers for a full-stack career change.

Tags in Obsidian helps to group similar files, But the tags have to be created manually in the YAML front matter.

We can rarely say NO to the house guest who asks for our WiFi access password. But sharing WiFi access means opening our network to a random device.

With many professionals working from home, Opening access to the network used by the work computers is a huge security risk /problems/107 even if they are connect to the office network via a VPN. Not to mention that even an average home user face wide range of threats on the Internet.

Although there ways to mitigate security risks when sharing WiFi to the house guest like using separate network running a VPN and using network level block lists; They are far beyond the technical capabilities of an average home user.

So, There's a need-gap for a solution which enables secure sharing of home WiFi to guests without technical overhead.

You've seen your parents (or) grand parents struggle with captcha no matter how simple it might be for you. The struggle is more for those with visual and motor disabilities.

I'm currently building an web application which would be used by the elderly, Even simple math captcha here would cause very high friction. But simple captcha (or) not having captcha would make attacking my application easier. So, I have to resort to complex back-end security mechanisms to protect against attacks without a captcha.

This is a catch 22 which affects almost all web applications now, Most just choose to not serve the elderly and the disabled by using captcha. This is a large need-gap for an inclusive browser challenge.

An Application Programming Interface(API) product is where the consumer is usually a developer who uses our product to perform a task within their own product to save cost and time in building it themselves.

Just like when building any SaaS product, A boilerplate ( /problems/345 ) is useful for reducing the time and effort in building our API product. But unlike a SaaS product, We need limited number of features as an API product doesn't usually have complex front-ends.

I often face the issue of being indecisive on how to spend my evenings or weekends. Be it laziness, not having any ideas/knowing where to start or difficulty in deciding between the many options that come up in event sourcing platforms.

A platform where once added some personal interests/details and date/time, it sends like 3 curated suggestions of things to do. Once one of the suggestions is accepted, it takes care of arranging it for the user. The suggestions can be sent on a regular cadence if there's a subscription model in place.

Basically, similar to one of those meal-kit services (BlueApron, HelloFresh, etc..) but for recreational activities.

I wasn't able to find a similar platform, but there's an endless numbers of websites for finding events or finding restaurants. Personally, when using them I find it a very time consuming and tedious process. Also because of the huge amount of options it makes it hard to choose one.

I'd like some feedback on where the holes in my thought process are, what issues I might face if I end up pursuing this and how to find out if there's demand for something like this. Thanks!

Obsidian is a knowledge base tool used to store and organize information as notes, Often called as a second brain.

Well but a brain is only as useful as its memory is and we should be able to recall the information when we need it. Although Obsidian provides ways to manually link notes, It doesn't provide any live recommendation as of writing this.

Say, When we are typing about something which matches the content(context) of existing notes then such content should be displayed to us; Essentially mimicking the recall ability of human brain but better due to near infinite memory of tools like Obsidian.

Twitter threads are a way to write long form content on the micro blogging website, It's often used by the entrepreneurial community and yet there's no straightforward mechanism to follow Twitter threads.

There are some Twitter threads which have been running for years, I myself post to my threads running for months for the products I build in public and there needs to be a way for those who'd like to be intimated about a new tweet to the thread. Twitter was supposedly testing such a feature in 2019 and it never saw day light as of writing this, Even in for the premium Twitter Blue subscribers; Which is funny as the ability to 'Mute a conversation' has been there for a long time.

Due to the pandemic induced e-learning, Morally bankrupt Education Technology startups with Unicorn status in India are exploiting parents from marginalized communities.

I believe if we could create awareness about the availability of high quality education content like that of Khan Academy in regional languages, It could mitigate the instances of parents and students falling prey to these fraudulent education startups. After all they anyways steal content from free educational courses and charge a premium.

For those content which are only available in English, We need startups which can put consistent effort to localize them into different regional languages of developing countries.

The story is same as with Patreon ( /problems/390 ) and Gumroad ( /problems/399 ) with Shopify, The small businesses are at mercy of obscure policies and lackluster support often leading to payment delays and account blocking.

Famous TV critic Matt Zoller Seitz had recently shared his ordeal with Shopify where it froze his bookstore account while continuing to take payments from his customers.

There are numerous other stories from those who have faced similar issues with Shopify. It's clear that there's large need-gap in the space of eCommerce websites in-spite of numerous alternatives.

Gumroad is a digital marketplace platform/payment host using which one can sell their digital files and services. It can serve as a host for digital files with paywall.

It's widely used by indies to sell their books, music, art etc. Yet their reviews at trust pilot is poor.

Much of the grievances seems to be related to,

Payments (Failures, Delays, Refunds).
Two-sided marketplace issues (End user unhappy with the purchase).
Account Suspension (Likely due to the violation of policies largely dictated by Gumroad's banking partners).
Customer service (Lack of thereof).

Retrieving baggage lost during transit at busy international airports are a huge hassle if not impossible. Since hundreds of baggage pass through the conveyor belts at these airports at any given moment it's easy for a baggage to be misplaced.

Locating such lost baggage could take weeks at busy airports where thousands of baggage are added to the lost&found section every day, If our baggage was lost at a connecting airport we would be in a different city or country by the time we realize that our baggage was lost.

Even the top-rated premium airlines do a bad job at repatriating lost baggage due to the sheer volume that they often prefer to reimburse instead, But some lost items could have emotional value.

There could be a need-gap for a service which could help repatriate lost luggage to the owner by coordinating with the airline/airport.

It always bugged me how expensive mobile app development is comparing to developing website. For example, it is perfectly standard for someone to quickly build simple website for a friend for a few bucks/coffee, while app development starts with a few thousands $, even for quite a simple use cases. This is especially concerning given how mobile apps perform much better for many use cases (like e-commerce).

Current "app builders" doesn't really address the problem, as they very much focus on designing the screens. They are also more similar to services like Wix than Wordpress (this means that it may be quite easy to build an app, but in case you need new and more specific features in the future, there is a big risk that you will need to rewrite it in different technology anyway, while in Wordpress, you can achieve pretty much anything through plugins or writing your own code).

I feel like there is a great room for technology similar to Wordpress in philosophy that would focus on rapid mobile app development that would focus more on covering common use cases and good plugin support instead of drag and drop design tool similar to Elementor.

Patreon is the de-facto solution for collecting recurring donation payments, When compared to solutions which charge commissions by transactions ( /problems/313 ) they charge a percentage over monthly revenue according to the plan.

At the time where anyone could create a payment workflow easily, Patreon still seems to be holding relevance due to its membership-communication and tier based features.

But Patreon has several shortcomings,

Stripe option only available for U.S. residents.
Different projects require separate accounts.
Tax collection support is limited to select countries.
Lack of configurable tax-invoice/receipt support.
Patreon commission/month + Payment gateway commission/transaction is expensive for small-time creators.

Stripe payment links allows payment workflows to be created without any code and hence has wide range of applications from casual payments to small-business transactions even without a website.

For multiple-currencies, Separate payment links has to be created i.e. one for USD, another of GBP etc. and there's no built-in option to redirect the customers from different locations to the correct payment link.

This defeats the purpose of payment links as complete no-code tool as the business owner has now got to implement Geo-redirection on their website to present the payment link for appropriate currency as per the location of their customer.

Let me know if you're facing such a problem and would like to have no-code solution.

Conclusion: it hasn't changed much at all.

It's still necessary to search on a myriad of sites. Most of the time, by the time you inquire, a place is gone. Or the ad was misleading and that "$2000 2BR" is actually "$2000 for the cheapest Studio we have, but we also have 2BR for $3.5K".

Finding places that match my criteria still requires careful inspection of the description. Checking a filter box for "Parking" excludes places that only mention parking in the description.

With all of the modernization and streamlining that has happened in other parts of our lives, apartment hunting remains unstructured, messy, frustrating, stressful.

Aggregators like Padmapper helped for awhile, but these days, it seems like most listings are posted by scammy middlemen just trying to make a commission on the listing, and now the site actively makes the process even harder.

Is hunting for an apartment doomed to be this messy forever? It seems like an area that is ripe for disruption or a better option, but what would it take to actually solve this?

They have to manually find the Twitter users they were following to follow them on Mastodon, This is tiresome if one was following hundreds or thousands of users on Twitter.

Currently in a long-distance relationship with my boyfriend and we've been looking for games we can both play just to be in the same space.

We tried so many already like Minecraft, which we purchased for our laptops but his internet couldn't handle being on my server. He even purchased "It Take Two" only to find out that it doesn't cross-platform (we will still play it when I see him). We also found other alternatives like Stardew Valley and Genshin Impact and basically, every other MMORPG's out there. But we've decided we just want a minimal home-building game we can both play on our phones. No other farming, not even stories, no quests.

We liked the concept of Adorable Home. Too bad that app isn't an online multiplayer, even for just 2 people. It's so calming and simple. We just want a "home to come home to" while we're apart.

I'm working on a side project that's not yet fully-baked. As such, I don't want to collect real money just yet because I don't want to increase my personal tax burden. In addition, having to pay more taxes is just annoying at an early stage of building a product.

In short, I prefer not to have to add to my tax return when I'm still prototyping my SaaS idea.

Currently, there are a good number of places to accept donations, such as: ko-fi, Patreon, Buy Me A Coffee, liberapay, Github sponsors However, all of these websites pay the project owner money, either through Stripe, Paypal, Payoneer, or a combination of.

My task here is for a platform for me to ask for donations or payments that pay me not in dollar amounts but in virtual gift cards, so that I can:

Validate my idea
Use the payments to pay for operational costs: if I can collect payments in the form of virtual gift cards, I can use them to pay for web server costs.
Avoid having to deal with taxes that come with collecting real money, at least until my product has been fully built out and has real users.

There's tons of skilled manga artists out there but only very few are making a living off of it.

It's very hard to sell manga art or even a whole series.

There are some apps where you can publish but you only receive a share of their ad revenue (e.g. webtoon, mangatoon).

Given the surge in manga in the Western hemisphere there should be more people willing to pay some money for reading art by independent manga artists.

Same is true for traditional western comics.

I guess people could support you by sending money through Patreon or similar sites but would be great to have a more reliable source of income and get paid directly for the product and art you deliver.

stack overflow has been the go to programming Q&A forum for over a decade, Hence much of its answers is outdated while the questions remain valid. Unless those who answered it initially update their answer regularly, The answers contain old information which may not be true currently.

Smartphone addiction has become a menace to the society, Some are able identify the detrimental effects of a smartphone's hold on their life early enough to reduce its usage or switch to a dumbphone but many realize it a bit too late and end up in a de-addiction center if lucky.

I don't think the problem can be just pinned on the lack of self-control of the individual when Billions of dollars are poured into making apps addictive in the name of increasing the engagement.

Smartphones are the first computer to the majority of the world population today, Unlike those who had the luxury of witnessing nascent Internet as a resource for Information & Knowledge through computers, the current younger generation is subjected to a barrage of assaults on their senses in the name of entertainment from addiction-optimized apps targeted individually through the exploitation of their privacy.

Imagine if opioid drugs optimized to each individual for maximum effect is widely available in the society?

My friend who works in Hollywood was complaining about how much reading he has to do, and how he wished someone could just read his screenplays to him in the car while he sat in LA traffic. I was speaking to my 19-year-old sister recently, and she was telling me about how she and her friends create a WhatsApp group for any social event they plan together. I thought this is a little crazy, since those groups just become stale soon after the event is over, and WhatsApp gets filled with unnecessary items.

Then I realized, that this is the younger generation, many of whom have never been on Facebook. I'm fairly confident that many in this group are not even aware that something like Facebook Events even exists. I'm 26, and my friends would always use Facebook Events for planning such events.

I know that there are also many others, who want to leave Facebook, but benefit from using Facebook Events to plan events.

I have a good feeling that it would be great to have a simple platform that helps create and manage small events, like birthday parties.

All industry-standard methods to collect data for web analytics are relying on the identification of recurring visitors and transmitting personal data to third-party companies. The problem here is the data privacy aspect.

Within the European Union this constellation leads to incomplete data in web analytics. Consent banners are implemented on websites to block any trackers and only allow tracking once visitors click something like 'yes please track me'. Obviously, a high number of visitors does not accept that.

For some use-cases, there is no alternative to visitor consent and profiling-based tracking. Just think of aggregating customer data within your CRM or tracking conversions and reporting them to ad networks. But there are other analytics tasks that would not require personal data or the identification of visitors.

Plain statistics about the number of website sessions, acquisition channels, or the performance of your content could be generated from technical website activity data without any connection to a visitor. We would not even require the IP addresses for this.

We are at higher risk of supply-chain attacks than ever before, A seemingly innocuous file we download from a trusted website could have been maliciously altered to compromise our systems by an attacker but the file integrity checking mechanisms are beyond the reach for an average Internet user.

Websites which care about the security of their users provide hash(MD5/SHA) or GPG signature file which can be used to verify the integrity of the file with a couple of commands, Although its straightforward for the power users it's not ideal for those who have never executed commands in the terminal/command prompt.

If the file verification can be automated at browser through standardized specification of hash signatures then end users need not verify the integrity of the files manually.

Currently, existing deployment platform such as Vercel or Netlify, enforce users to use their own CDN. This turns out to be an expensive solution when traffic is high or team is large. It'd be nice to benefit from their nice developer experience while still owning our deployment artifacts and deciding where to upload / host these files. 3 points posted by svedova

Somebody please make OkCupid for Jobs. Both employers and applicants fill out questions that the community curates (so they can be job-specific, industry-specific, etc). Both employers and employees get matches via algorithm rather than receiving 100 random resumes or 100 random job suggestions that have nothing to do with you. Existing sites do this, but very poorly, because they only try to detect information out of a resume and detect keywords in a job listing. There is only so much data you can gleam from those sources and it's highly variable. You need to ask specific questions, like "Is Functional Programming the best form of programming?" or "Do you prefer asynchronous communication when dealing with coworkers?", or "Do you like being in an office?", or "Do you like working in finance?".

A lot of people who freelance already use too many tools in the stack. e.g. a lot of freelancers use Freshbooks, Asana, Toggl, Jira, Calend.ly to manage their business. They have either to integrate it or manually rewrite information between apps. Not to mention some features missing like simply tracking invoices sent/invoices paid.

Also, many people right now are quitting their jobs and moving to freelance, and they are worried about how to choose the right tools, which won't be very expensive (for example they were working in enterprise segment, and they had all the tools paid by their company - now they have to buy it on their own).

There are number of solutions which lacks some of the features of "all-in-one" stack, or are too expensive to buy.

Website categorization is the process of classifying websites into different categories using its content. Categorization of websites is useful for aggregation, security, moderation, archiving etc.

There are are several website categorization tools which work fine for well-known websites, But fail for newer websites or web pages with lesser text content. This limits the use cases for which those tools could be used.

I'm exploring whether there's a need-gap for more robust website categorization tool which can identify the category of modern websites, web pages with lesser text content.
