People who don't want to send their house or business CCTV video to be stored by some company or don't want to pay yearly cloud subscription charges prefer self-hosted Network Video Recording(NVR). Self-hosting a home security camera setup now requires finding the right camera and setting it up with tools like Shinobi, ZoneMinder, Motion etc.

But self-hosting a CCTV setup has several problems,

Supported cameras are often low quality, riddled with bugs, never receive any firmware updates and send data outside the network.
Open-source CCTV solutions require separate computer to run while proprietary IP Cameras are self-contained solutions.
Setting up open-source CCTV software is beyond the technical capabilities for an average house or business owner.
Quality of motion detection are not on par with proprietary camera systems.

There aren't any large scale McMaster-Carr type online supplier for hardware, tools or raw materials in India. With eBay gone, there seems to be an absolute vacuum in this space.

Large businesses can bulk-order hardware tools and materials directly from the source but makers, tinkerers and small businesses are dependent upon importing through overseas eCommerce sites which are often plagued with shipping issues and exaggerated costs.

eCommerce businesses selling electronics components and compute hardware catering to makers and tinkers in India seem to be doing very well, In fact Raspberry Pi foundation sells its product in India on day one through several suppliers like in developed markets and so there's no reason for why an online hardware marketplace catering to the same people shouldn't work out.

Now that Chinese eCommerce websites are also banned in India, It seems like a perfect opportunity to address the need-gap in online hardware marketplace

Most people are above-average skill level in at least one specific area, yet are lacking in others. For instance, a med school student may be proficient at studying and memorization, but need help with self-care routines. A middle-aged married woman may have great advice for navigating interpersonal relationships but could stand to learn a lot about gardening. It would be great if there were some social media platform to connect users in a mentor/mentee capacity

There are endless self-help videos available on YouTube for any topic, but they do not offer the same level of individualized attention that a coach can provide
Traditional coaching in the desired area is always expensive and/or unavailable and/or too general. Furthermore, people are much more open about themselves if they can be anonymous

The challenge with this is how to validate a user's skill level in the area they claim to be skilled in, and how to incentivize users to coach others.

There are a few 'count things' apps but they are terribly confusing to use, terribly expensive, and also not sure if they are enabled to count things of such a small thickness (but I don't see why they couldn't).

I recently worked in a database support team where I had to dig deep into the db by executing multiple/lengthy/nested SQL select statements to find the root cause of the issue or for analysing the data.

So I started creating a simple tool which allows us just to connect our db to the tool and then instead of typing those SQL scripts, once could just click the table/tables and the record/records that he needs to view and they get displayed. Moreover that data can be also used for analysing the business.

Need your suggestion guys on the idea.

Recently I got bored of the content from my subscribed channels on the YouTube and I asked my friends to share their subscription list only to find out that there's no such option to share YouTube subscription list.

It seems earlier there used to be an export option and third party service which allowed importing subscription list into another Google account, but not anymore.

There are others asking for the same in the YouTube community forum without any solutions. I think a tool which allows easy sharing and exporting of YouTube subscription list could be appreciated by these people and me!

I'm tired of the hate mongering, cognitive bias rich, mindless advertisement fuelled News media be it on Internet or Television or Radio or even traditional Paper medium.

When I say Internet, I don't mean just the websites, but also mobile Apps with infinite scroll which has put pressure on the News Agencies to produce content at a blistering rate, resulting in low quality content without any editorial oversight or fact checking or even proofreading.

I'm tired of these News medium exploiting my FOMO, I'm convinced that 99.9% of the news I consume every day has just information I don't need, Information I will never use in my life, at least in the foreseeable future. This is after choosing the categories of interest, giving personal information about myself than I should have to the large media companies and thereby advertisers.

I'm convinced that these News media are trying make me someone they want to be, rather than give me what I need.

What does it take to get only the News I need, which will be actually useful for my life?

I'm forgetting to take regular breaks when I work from home as I get too involved with the task, as there's no one to interrupt me like in office. Without regular breaks, I get back-pain due to over exerting myself with the work which also increases my depression at the end of the day.

Current activity timers require manual start, which are useless when we forget to start the activity timer after a break or when starting the task.

I would like an activity timer which starts automatically when I start the work and remind me at regular intervals to take a break from work without me having to take any explicit action with the timer.

There is no shortage of online courses, first there were the likes of Coursera, Udacity and now every University have their own Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) or have partnerships with online education companies to provide their course.

All of them claim that their certificate is valuable with the employers, but how can be we sure of it? There is no clear way to know which certificates, from which MOOC providers are valuable and which companies accept such certificates.

It could be very useful if there was an online portal, which compares and rates these online course certificates based upon the quality of education and actual number of people who got employed because of the certificate.

When I'm training for something say for a weight loss milestone or a new language; I usually give up midway due to lack of motivation.

I know there are several apps for training which put us against several other users and challenges us to rise up in the rankings. But being an introvert, those kind of apps just rises my anxiety and doesn't help me with my training.

I was thinking, if there was a virtual buddy system i.e. someone real who trains along with us for mutual milestones, what ever it may be; say learning cooking, learning programming, physical training etc. that can be highly productive.

You may say, why not ask your friend to train with you? Well, friendships come with packages and biases. I don't think we can have absolute focus in training for something with an existing friend all of a sudden, if at all there's such a friend for everyone.

Besides, an app which pairs us with some random individual for mutual training is a great way to make friends who share common interests.

Let me know if you would like to use a virtual buddy training and if there are any apps like that already.

Generic medicines are literally the saviour of lives for those who cannot afford the branded medications. I often find it difficult to locate the generic equivalent for branded drugs mentioned in the prescription.

Sites like express-scripts and netcareclinic have information on generic drugs, but they are not as straightforward as a consumer would wish to be. There are number of websites from India, which is not surprising as it is a world leader in generic medicine; but the sites don't last long and not all medications listed there are available outside India.

I would wish for an app, which lets me scan the prescription and get generic drug equivalents with all necessary information immediately.

There are number of platforms for tech graduates to show their skills via hackathon, competition to get recruited. But there are no such platform for a non tech graduate or for someone who has non technical skills in general such as agriculture, cooking, sales, marketing, accounting, communication, research, writing, travel, fashion, art, design (non-digital) etc. to showcase their skills for getting recruited.

I think its high time cookathons, saleathons, writeathons etc. for non-tech fields is conducted to connect the skilled with those who are looking for them. My wishful thinking is that this should encourage even those without proper degree or formal education in those fields should be encouraged to participate if they have necessary skills.

This sounds like a true problem, but one reason for why this hasn't been taken up or solved yet could be because the majority of those who are facing this problem are jobless and entrepreneurship is the last thing which comes to mind when someone is not having any money.

Podcasts are an antidote to noise filled, cognitive bias fuelling on-screen media. But, there are limitations to consuming information from audio; searching and retrieving information from a podcast are full of hurdles, audio only podcasts are out of reach for people with hearing disabilities and other accessibility issues.

Considering the state of current speech recognition, audio processing; I would like a podcast app where transcript are generated in real-time and showcased like how lyrics are displayed in the music streaming apps with ability to search over podcast's transcript at any time.

There are few services which offer transcript for podcasts, but aren't real-time and require payments to be made for each episodes.

P.S. Android has live transcribe feature for any audio, but including transcript within a podcast app would be frictionless and could provide historical search features.

Human memory is overrated, they are weak and fallible. Study shows we tend to think that we will remember something important more than we will. False memory can be implanted in someone's mind extremely easily, something which marketers, politicians, elements with nefarious intentions have been exploiting for centuries and our brain itself can create false memories to cope with trauma.

Then there are numerous memory biases which clout our judgement leading to undesirable consequences for ourselves and for others around us.

In-spite of hard scientific evidence that our memory cannot be trusted, our day-to-day life, stability of the society; especially the legal system is built upon human memory. We need frictionless solutions to improve human memory.

I spend much of my time browsing Reddit, YC-HackerNews and looks like needgap is going to be on that list. I'm not sure whether this is social network addiction, as none of the sites I mentioned is a social network. But, I spend inordinate amount of time on them and on other stuff without getting the tasks which I had in my mind done.

At the end of the day my tasks lists are full, get postponed, more tasks get added the next day, this cycle repeats. This undone task lists depresses me every night, but I don't do much about it the next day and hence the cycle.

I want something which helps me focus and gets things done. I'm sure, I'm not the only one with this issue.

The day before my surgery, which had high probability that I may not survive; I was setting up master key for my encryption keys, writing it to a physical file and handed it to my father telling him to hand it over to my company shareholders if the need arises and provided biometric access to my mother from my smartphone. Reason being, I was the single founder, executive of my startup, all the intangible assets was under my control and most of it encrypted as it should be.

So, incase of my demise I wanted my shareholders to have access to the data if they decide to run the company. Obviously I survived, but looking back at that day; I feel that if someone knew that they may die the next day they should probably do something better with their time than reminding their loved ones that they may die. Of-course, writing master key to a file is not great for security either.

For a non subjective example for this need gap, $145 million worth cryptocurrencies was locked after the CEO died and he was the only person with the passphrase for encryption.

It is not just that depression is hard, treating depression itself is very hard. Due to number of variables for the occurrence of depression like environment, genetics and numerous other factors in the brain; most common treatments available for depression don't work for everyone.

Patients with depression often have to undergo, long cycles of medication to see if the particular treatment has any positive feedback. Current treatment for depression like SRI/SNRI medications do work for many after several weeks but if it doesn't then the long course of medications, usually with side-effects are useless.

There is a need gap for personalised medicine for depression, where the patient can be diagnosed fast, easily and accurate medication be prescribed immediately instead of current trial & error type of depression treatments.

Hearing aid features such as audio amplification can be enabled via the combination of mic in the earphones and audio processing in the app. Ambient noise cancellation can be enabled in the same way, giving us a quiet ambience on demand when we need to focus. All these without any prejudice which comes from wearing hearing aids.

Deep Fake video is where the facial expression, speech of the person shown in the video aren't real and is computer generated using Machine Learning. This has profound consequences on how we validate the content, accelerating the fake news problem and even affecting the legal system in the countries which accept videos as evidence.

Imagine a video showing leader of a country discussing pre-emptive strike on another country, only that content of the video is not real but an ultra realistic deep fake video, but in the age of confirmation bias; we cannot expect people to validate everything they see or hear (if that was possible, fake news problem wouldn't exist in first place).

There are ethical use cases for deep fake video but there would be no stopping to exploitation of the deep fake tech for nefarious means. Hence there is a need gap for building tools which can be integrated in the systems for validating information.

Though the generation of deep fake videos fairly simple with right ML tools and setup, it is not yet available as a commercial grade software; though it may change soon.

There's lot of controversy surrounding deep fake videos for right reasons, as it could accelerate the Fake News/ Misinformation problem, but this need gap is for the ethical usage of deep fake (needs better name?) videos.

Online video consumption is growing at unprecedented rate, people spend inordinate amount of time (6hrs-8hrs/week) watching videos. Traditional content formats such as text, has already fallen out of favour. For someone who cannot indulge in the physical effort of creating videos can only rely upon deep fake video tech to generate video for them when a script is fed to it.

Besides, deep fake videos can save video production cost for all.

Learning and speaking a foreign language is easier when compared to mastering the accent of a native speaker. Many, who have thought to have mastery of a foreign language have found that the native speaker of that language don't understand them due to the accent.

Accent is the manner of pronunciation peculiar to a particular individual, location or nation. Mastering the accent of the native speaker, reduces the friction in the communication between a native and non-native speaker of the same language.

There are numerous intuitive ways to learn foreign languages now a days, including mobile apps; but none I know of provides the native accent of a word or sentence in my own voice. I feel learning a language with native accent in our own voice would offer much more complete experience.

Hence, there is a need gap for a service which takes in our voice and plays back audio of a word or sentence in a language and accent of our choosing. Please do share your experiences on this problem and possible solutions.

Anyone who's into Virtual Reality or First Person games or realistic simulations (pilot training) would have faced simulation sickness i.e. motion sickness w.r.t display causing nausea. Some report facing it on smartphones/tablets too.

It is believed that it happens as our brain receives the perception that we are moving due to the feedback received from our eyes (from screen) but our vestibular system (or inner ear) doesn't detect any movement; This conflict makes triggers an evolutionary response to throw up because it could have been due to something we have eaten.

Research is being done to confirm the reason for why it happens, but it is confirmed that it happens. Little research done on the subject suggest that the vast majority of us can acclimatise to the disembodied motion of games, but some noticeable percentage of people either never fully acclimate or do so very slowly.

With the towering rise of the VR applications, simulation sickness has become a major bottleneck and hence exists a need gap. Perhaps the solution for simulation sickness could have greater application for motion sickness in general such as during air/sea travel.

Hi all, since some weeks ago I have been diving in a new industry and learning new skills/knowledge. I have been creating small projects to showcase these skills. In the near future I would like to create a startup in the industry I am diving into. Before doing that, it would be great to have experience with organizations where I could help with my new skills/knowledge. In my view this would be a win-win. I would get to gain experience and use my new skills (before getting paid gigs and to build a portfolio), while organizations can benefit from the help in an area where they lack experience or time for.

Think about it as a very short project based internship. For a day-week max. For example, a small organization who wants help with their website and could use even basic knowledge of web development. You as a starting web developer or student, could help for two days In which organizations can benefit from someone helping them with their social media usage or web development.

But there's a problem especially for new accounts, if a new twitter account like/retweet/reply to a famous account then it's an immediate recipe for a shadow ban or Twitter Jail even if the purpose was completely innocuous.

Often, even tweeting the product/company url twice in a day can get one into trouble as Twitter's algorithms are very stringent towards new accounts without enough followers. This leads to the disappointment of my clients, who come to me when they release a product or launch their company and obviously the account I create for them would be new and likelihood of going to Twitter jail is very high.

Fortunately, Twitter releases you from the jail if the infraction isn't severe but there's no way to know when that will happen. It has taken couple of hours, couple of weeks or even never in my experience. There are services like shadowban.eu which provide details about your Twitter Jail sentence but currently there's no way to know when you are out of the jail unless you manually check regularly.

I invest in domains, so buying domain names which grow in value matters to me. But, none of the current domain appraisals take current world events into account when estimating the value of a domain.

Anyone can tell, covid19.com must be valued in thousands of dollars where as it is estimated to be worth about $100, similarly trumpbidendebate.com is appraised to be about $229 and trumpcovid.com is $500 (All at the time of writing).

This is because, current domain value estimates are based upon TLD, age, keywords, search volume for the keyword, advertising competition, comparable sales but are not updated in real time based on latest world events.

I would like domain appraisal based upon current world events and alerts for such high value domains.

Every now and then a service announcing notification for Hacker News pops up which takes in email id, username and send email for HN replies. Then there are browser add-ons which send notifications when there are new comments to subscribed HN threads.

But, as far as I have searched there is no service which allows me to subscribe to specific threads and comments for notifications without having to give in my email id.

I think there would be takers for such a service, including myself as HN crowd are generally averse to mandatory email id and many would like to follow interesting threads, comments including ones which they have replied to. 4 points posted by Shinzo Reyen

I like how public chats on YouTube, Twitch can be used to discuss about the content with several others. When I buy something online, I wonder why there is no public chat facility on these websites and only person I could chat with about the product is the store employee or a bot.

When I buy something online, I search for reviews, competitive products and possibly lower price elsewhere; it would be nice if there was a public chat on Amazon or other ecommerce sites where I can discuss with other buyers directly instead of unreliable and often fake reviews on the ecommerce websites. 4 points posted by Natasha Taylor

When I was in school we used to collaboratively write stories by each individual in the class continuing upon the story on a paper. It was lot of fun and I think it made us better at writing and reading.

Lately I've been searching for an app which does collaborative fiction i.e. where one person kicks of a story by writing few sentences, the next person continues it and so on. The best I could find was wattpad, but that is more of a crowd validated writing where the author regularly connects with their readers.

But, what I want is a crowd written story for fun say like wikipedia for fiction. If anyone knows such an app let me know or please build one!

Web software consumer market has been behaviourally optimised to seek 'FREE' products. People happily use low quality free products, which steal their data, control their free speech and elect governments for them; but stay away from high quality, reasonably priced products which offer better values for their price.

If this continues, only monopolies which can spend Billions in advertising their free products can continue their business and small businesses which aims to provide better value cannot even reach their customers.

There is a need for a new marketing phenomenon which can help such reasonably priced products reach their intended customers i.e. those who are willing to pay for better value and create a behavioural change towards buying high quality, sustainable products.

I like to listen to podcasts more than I like to watch videos on Youtube. Some videos such as Interviews, News can be converted to podcasts as usually there is not much value in the video of such content; but the conversion needs to be done manually by extracting audio from the video.

I would like to have a podcast app which can also take in video links (such as Youtube, Vimeo etc.) and convert them to audio (i.e. podcasts) automatically.

An average US smartphone user supposedly receives 46 app push notifications per day. It's highly likely that most of them are distributed during working hours, so if distributed equally an average user is interrupted ~ 3 times/hour during 16 hours when they are awake. This figure is likely higher in some Asian countries, where some apps play integral part in the lifestyle.

Science is clear on the effect of notifications on productivity - it's bad. Both android and iOS has features to disable notifications for the entire app or by categories, but when it comes to categories the onus is on the app developer to maintain the etiquette.

I think there is a need gap to impose etiquette on the users as well, considering majority of the notifications are from messaging apps and social networks. Making the user select the category of notification e.g. 'delayed' for a meme & 'immediate' for urgent, emergency communication can help this.

It is difficult for small or new companies and independent content creators to rank on search even though their content may be truly good. It means small business lose a lot of potential revenue and exposure every year simply because they can't compete with a company that has the budget to have better SEO strategy. Existing search engines prioritize long time players because of the trust of their content, not necessarily quality content compared to a newcomer.

Like the title says- I forget to check out my bookmarks. I often stumble across some really cool articles/blog posts which I often bookmark. But the next day, I totally forget about them. The bookmarking feature on most browsers isn't that user-friendly and I have over 500 bookmarks waiting to be re-opened again. Maybe some cool startup idea I found in a blog post or maybe some really cool product which I want to read more about later. It's almost like I need a reminder to reopen my bookmarks, but this feature isn't there on Chrome or Firefox.
