Recently I had cleared an interview from a large organisation and all that was pending was verification on my previous employment. The verification was conducted by a 3rd party and they sent email to all my past employers. My very first employer (5 years back) had since shutdown the company and in-spite of personally vouching for me to the verification company; they didn't accept it because it wasn't from their official email id.

The communication from that employer wasn't from official email id because the THE COMPANY HAD SHUT DOWN, the verification company kept insisting that my employer verify via official email id. The incompetence of the verification company in not knowing how email domains work has nearly cost my job.

If an email domain is all what it takes to verify, then how is it even properly verified? I think there is a need gap for better employee verification system.

With Monopoly or Duopoly in the Telecom industry of most countries, the democracy of mobile Internet itself is under threat. There is a needgap to remove cellular network stack for mobile Internet completely.

Fortunately there is no need to reinvent the wheel, we have not been using cellular network for mobile Internet in our homes and offices for several years with WiFi. Long range WiFi hotspots outside our home/office can address this need gap as well.

The reason why long range WiFi hotspots haven't been fielded widely is due to the regulations concerning transmission power for radio, the transmission power required for long rage WiFi transmitter is prohibited in several countries. There are no such limitations on long range WiFi receivers.

A long range WiFi receiver accessory for smartphones/laptops with WiFi hotspots placed at algorithmically calculated optimal locations can address this problem.

Only way to differentiate between a missed call and an accidental call is the number of times the phone rang i.e. one who really called would likely wait till the end of all rings and the one who dialled by accident would likely end the call as soon as it is found.

So, if the missed call alert shows the number of rings (or) the duration of the rings then it would be easier to asses whether someone really tried to call me or was it just an accidental call.

I think, this would be a useful feature to have and hence there is a need gap for such a feature.

Two of my family members at different times have got their finger hurt on the blades of a mixer grinder. At both times as a quick reaction to close the lid of the jar when it was loose and the mixer was switched on accidentally or deliberately.

May be these can be dismissed as lack of focus when operating things which can hurt us, But we tend to loose focus when doing mundane things every day.

I feel there is a need to build safe mixer grinder which can prevent such accidents.

Affiliate marketing is the best alternative to those who don't want to encroach upon the privacy of their readers with ads which uses tracking cookies. When used in a content without conflict of interest it can add value to both the readers and the publisher.

But the current referral system is messy with,

Each product or service having tied up with a different agency for providing referral links or having their own.
Arbitrary approval criteria for new signups.
Obscure payment policies etc.
Publishers gaming the referral system where only a single eCommerce company is benefited.

There's need-gap in affiliate marketing to cut down the middlemen and to connect the advertisers with publisher directly with a single universal referral system.

Netflix knows what type of movies I like, Amazon knows which brands I like to purchase from, DoorDash knows what I like to eat and Google knows everything there is to know about me; But I would like to know, keep track of it what I like with me and offer it to services as and when needed.

There's not much to worry about if these services use their recommendation system only to deliver what we need as a consumer, But after learning what we like the recommendation system is used for their advantage to sell what they want to us(those with more markup), even if there's a better option for us available in their platform.

During development and video production I have to test in different browsers for adjusting to this and it consumes lot of effort.

Account payable teams of large multinational corporations still rely upon legacy wire transfers for foreign exchange incurring huge transaction fees, delays in receiving the money and often have to visit the bank in person for Forex remittance(In today's remote first world!) . The problem is more pronounced when one of the parties is from a developing country and compliance hurdles adds up to this problem.

I want to sell hardware products internationally, But as a solopreneur meeting compliance for hardware locally and internationally is a nightmare and hence I settle for building SaaS products like most other indie hackers.

There are hardware product marketplaces like Tindie which help solopreneurs get their customers, But the seller has to still maintain the inventory and ship directly to the buyer. Today hosting a eCommerce website as an individual is not the limiting factor even for those who don't know to code, So the real need gap exists in removing the compliance and shipping hurdles.

With tough competition in SaaS industry, Building hardware products is a great way to differentiate our product line-up. With the rising number of solopreneurs I think it's high time this need gap gets addressed.

I have couple of ideas to address this which I'll share in the comments and would like to hear more from you.

I am planning to take a world tour after the pandemic, When I do I would like to be apprised of the local laws in each country when compared to mine. Contrary to what many think, There are some unexpected laws in even developed nations which can get one into trouble.

So I would like to compare the common laws of country I am visiting with the laws of my country e.g. If I am traveling from UK to Acropolis, Greece the service should warn me about high heels being illegal in a easily understandable manner. Also since there new local regulations due to pandemic in almost all countries, This type of service can be of immense help if updated regularly with accurate information.

I know this type of app already exist in some form. But after trying some of them, I believe they have still room for improvement. Its too often "go there", "find that". An application with local adventure in cities. Once selected an adventure the user follow a story line with steps to achieve. It helps him discover a local environment, with a potential to history and point of interest of a city. With a more premium model you could imagine more physical interaction with the world (IoT, NFC, QRcode, etc) and a proper follow up in case of difficulty same as the master of game in an escape game. Without access to synchronous book clubs or study groups, our options are limited to note-taking, self-refelction - pen and paper or apps like Notion - to retain key, actionable information, quotes and lessons from great nonfiction psychology, sociology and business titles.

Apps like Blinkist offer professional summaries but it is not the same as really reading and absorbing it yourself and applying the lessons to work and life.

I sometimes re-read the title but this means finding the physical or digital copy, or audio book and the time to read/listen again.

I am a jolly type person who enjoys the relationships we make at office. For the past 1.5 years I have been working remotely due to the pandemic and I feel very lonely, depressed due to that.

Worst of all it looks like the remote work is going to be permanent and switching jobs is not an option as all other firms are offering remote work only.

Getting our identity stolen online can have debilitating consequences, With many adopting to the online lifestyle of sharing unfettered access to their personal data it has become very easy for a cyber criminal to steal someone's identity.

Solutions to safe guard online identity hasn't caught up with the rate of identity theft. Scammers are even using stolen identity to run successful fraudulent indiegogo campaigns and the one who got their identity stolen have to face the brunt of it (Read pinned comment of that YT video).

Technically inclined have had cryptographic measures like PGP key to verify their identity. But a solution to verify identity should as easy as sharing personal data online, for it to see mass adoption.

Royalty free music is often either over-used, or needs complex licensing to use it without copyright strikes. I propose building a SaaS service where you can access music and download and use as much as you need, based on monthly billing. The genres would be varied and you could use the music anywhere - on marketing videos, explainer videos, podcasts, video games, etc

I am a composer and would build it in nocode using Airtable as my framework. There, you could access all files, preview them easily, filter by genre and mood and download and use what you need.

Major online news websites rely upon paywalls for subscription to fund their journalism. But this becomes a hindrance for submission forums like HackerNews, Reddit etc. When the sites with paywall are avoided, the websites looses potentially large number of visitors from these submission forums and thereby potential subscribers.

One trick which is commonly used in these submission sites is to include the archive.org URL of the news article which bypasses the paywall in several news websites but not all e.g. Financial Times, But this results in the news website loosing all traffic from the submission forums.

News websites can disable the paywall based on the source like they do for social media, But perhaps a paywall service which can detect high traffic sources and disable paywall automatically could be useful for these news sites.

Recent study shows consumer pulse oximeters are inaccurate for individuals with darkly pigmented skin. Researchers say that the pulse oximeters tend to overestimate the oxyhemoglobin saturation (Sao2) at low Sao2 levels.

Patients relying on just the Sao2 readings from the pulse oximeter alone i.e. SpO2 can risk missing out treatment at crucial time due to this inaccuracy and so doctors advice giving importance to the shortness of breath and trends of pulse oximeter readings over absolute readings.

There is a need gap for pulse oximeters which can offset the bias due to skin color after further research on this subject.

Current Smartphones, Tablets for most is more powerful(compute) than their old computers. At this point we should be able to distribute the computing load across all our capable devices. Distributed Computing is now limited to scientific research, data science, machine learning and I feel it's high time we use it for solving some consumer problems.

I use low power computers by choice for my climate goals, So I have several low power task specific computing devices. Consider able to compress 2TB folder consisting of disjoint files using the CPU of computer, smartphone, tablet etc. If Handbrake could use distributed computing then the encoding could be much faster. Network is an Achilles heel for distributed computing, but average network bandwidth in home networks have been growing steadily.

The manufacturers themselves are unlikely to create an interoperable environment, but perhaps applications which function in the user space could fulfill this need gap.

I run mostly text based websites nowadays, but for each post I have to create a featured image manually for it to look good when shared on social media.

For user generated content I currently create an og:image procedurally with title text, But for manually typed content say like my curated list of startup tools which has new content regularly I have to take a screenshot along with older content and So I'm looking for a service which helps me take screenshots of specific elements and saves me the time of building one myself.

Brands have made developing cult following as the way to do business. This creates lot of negativity as I constantly see consumers fighting each other for their favorite brand over Internet forums, Private businesses shouldn't be able to command this much hold on their customers.

I think one way to address this would be the consumer choice to let go of the brands completely and buy high quality nondescript items without any brands. When I search for such no-brand products I see couple of websites pop up, many of them for just T-shirts with one difference being https://brandless.com/ which seems to be offering products from different categories.

I feel there's a need for more brandless type eCommerce websites, especially since the manufacturer can pass on the savings from brand development, marketing to the end consumers. Would you assert your consumer choice to buy products without any branding to reduce the hold private business have over you? If you are a manufacturer would you sell your product without branding through such eCommerce website?

I have found some of my data on pastebin during a casual web search and had to take it down.

When our data is leaked on the Internet, by the time we come to know about it's often too late and it's usually already been shared widely on the Internet. So taking down the data becomes very hard or even impossible.

A service which monitors the Interweb, Dark web for our data and alert us in time would be invaluable for the victims of leaked data.

If you regularly send out google calendar events with more than 100 invitees, the guest list is automatically hidden which means you can't see the RSVP status for your invitees. Also Google Calendar has a 200 person invite limitation per event.

When I learn new concepts, focusing on the history behind the concept i.e. why there was a need for it, what problem it solved, what was the earlier iterations of it helps me to understand that concept in a much more intuitive way.

e.g.

Exploring how Pi was calculated 2000 years ago by Archimedes using n-gon and How the method was continued until Newton changed the landscape in 17th century by introducing his formula derived from geometric construction gives us greater understanding of geometry, arithmetic progression, calculus etc.[1]
How the usage of binary in the form of punch cards in Jacquard loom for repeating patterns in textiles; gives us the foundation of modern computing[2].

Wikipedia's history section does a decent job, but how about an in-depth, intuitive mechanism to learn concepts using its history?

Every single day we make several decisions with varying level of consequences. I would like help to make faster, thorough decisions which has better probability towards favorable outcomes.

Although technology influences several of our decisions, I wonder whether technology is at a stage where I can ask a digital assistant to make a decision for 'What dress should I where today' to 'Which insurance policy should I buy' considering all requisite personal data to make a decision regarding these i.e. Calendar, Health, Finance etc. are already with the Big Data companies; Only difference being the decision should be in my favor instead of an advertiser.

When I'm watching a movie and If I don't understand a word I pause the movie and look up the word in the dictionary to understand that word. Streaming services like Amazon Prime show details about that particular scene when paused like Cast, Trivia etc. in their X-Ray feature but not synonyms or thesaurus for the dialogue.

Say I'm watching a video and press a special key e.g. 'S' and Synonyms pop up for the words in the dialogue sentence except basic grammar. It's not like every word in the sentence requires synonyms, there will be usually couple of hard words in a dialogue depending upon the movie.

I feel this is a great way to learn language, Me and my friends improved our English language skills by watching Hollywood movies and I'm sure there are many like us around the world.

Each website have their own maximum size limit for uploading .pdf, .jpg documents e.g. 100KB, 2MB etc. It takes a long time to reduce the size of the document to their size limit because the available tools compress the file size to an arbitrary size.

If the file is compressed to a size over that limit, the file cannot be uploaded and if the file is compressed to a size lesser than the limit it looses quality unnecessarily.

If the compression tool can take the size limit as input from the user and compress the file to that limit then this problem can be addressed.

If a computer is hacked and fake incriminating evidence is placed by the attacker; The victim is left to the mercy of the investigating agencies to uncover the truth and for vindication.

We need a way to prove that our computer was hacked beyond any reasonable doubt as an user without dependence on forensic experts.

Just like how tamper evident labels on physical products tell us if someone has tampered with that product, I would like something for computers which definitely tells that it has been tampered(hacked) with and which can be used in the court of law.

Now that many are working from home, webcams are of demand and often unavailable. Even when available, they are the same ones from a decade ago.

e.g. Logitech C270 debuted 10 years back, I even had one which I gave it to someone about 6 years ago as I didn't use it much at that time. Guess what, I had to buy the same webcam again now for 40 USD!

Which other tech from a decade ago are we still buying as it is? I can't believe entry level webcams hasn't gotten better when the phone cameras on even entry level smartphone gets better every 6 months.

When an email bounces, it gets auto-unsubscribed in many mailing lists to protect the reputation of the sender or the mailer service but a working email id can still bounce if the email service provider is having a technical issue and in this case all email ids belonging to that particular email service provider in the mailing list could potentially be unsubscribed automatically.

This can lead to mass unsubscribes if a major email service provider goes down, resulting in unrecoverable cost to the current Newsletter Economy.

To prevent this the mailer service should check the service status of the email provider before mailing to the list.

I think there is a need gap for a service which keeps track of the service status of all email providers in realtime (i.e. not dependent upon user reports like downdetector) which can be used by the mailer services.

There are tools which provides analytics to do A/B testing on social media but all of them require the post/tweet to be published and are time consuming.

If there is a tool/service which allows A/B testing of social media posts without publishing by using historical and current data then it can make lives of social media managers easy.

Inexpensive home routers available on Amazon, Walmart, eBay are riddled with security vulnerabilities which allows a remote attacker to take control over the device and get inside our home network.

People buy these routers because they are inexpensive and very easy to setup but has to pay much more once hacked. Secure home routers from reputed brands which receive regular updates are expensive or DIY home routers are hard to setup for an average person.

There is a need gap for inexpensive secure home network routers which are easy to setup.

As the vaccine for COVID-19 is on the horizon, world over nations are scrambling to upgrade their cold chain - logistics and supply chain to deliver the vaccine to their citizens when made available.

Vaccines generally require very cold temperatures for storage during distribution. Although several countries already have national vaccination program with cold chain infrastructure, COVID-19 vaccines announced so far have very stringent cold storage requirement of -20˚C to -80˚C making it difficult for distribution even for those countries.

Furthermore, these vaccines consists of multiple doses, so theoretically we are looking at last mile delivery of about at-least 15 Billion vaccines doses for a two dose COVID-19 vaccine.

This raises large need gap in several sectors where startups can participate directly or indirectly namely,

Vaccine Manufacturing (Optimization).
Fridge, Freezers (Storage).
Insulation materials (Temperature control).
Transportation (Air/Land).
Reliable temperature monitoring (IoT).
Inventory management, Distribution management (Cloud software, Database systems)
Post-Vaccine large scale health symptoms monitoring(Cloud software, IoT, Mobile apps, Encryption).
Strengthening telecommunication systems to handle the network pressure (Computer Networking, Cyber Security).

While second/third wave of COVID-19 has started to take its toll globally, horrors of long term symptoms from original COVID-19 survivors are coming to light.

Symptoms ranging from breathlessness, fatigue to damage in brain tissue from MRI scans have been reported by several COVID survivors including those who were asymptomatic initially and those who survived COVID without any hassle.

Since long term effects of COVID are just starting to being explored by researchers, medical practitioners are under-equipped with data to help their patients reporting symptoms of their long COVID. Self help online forums are reportedly playing a huge role for these COVID survivors to discuss about their persisting symptoms.

A dedicated platform to self report long-term COVID symptoms with provisions to intuitively collect scientific data would be invaluable to researchers and scientists around the world.

Teach me vocabulary without spending extra time #language #education

I'm trying to improve my vocabulary to sound sophisticated when I speak and write emails. There are several tools which helps me to learn a new word every day, but since it's out of context I usually forget most of them.

I was wondering that it would be nice if I can learn better vocabulary while doing routine tasks like browsing the web, but most of the web articles use dumbed-down vocabulary for the benefit of general audience and so I'm not learning any new words.

Have any of you faced this situation? How can this be solved?
