When I want to find out more about something - could be an illness, a new topic I found interesting (AI/ML), or just new travel ideas, I spend hours searching online, reading reviews, blogs, forums, etc. and then creating a mental conclusion about what I found. In the process, I bookmark pages for later review and make notes if necessary.

Can I out-source this work to someone to kind-of, summarise the findings and give me a balanced view, highlight the most relevant links for me to look at and basically cut-down a lot of the initial time I spend on searching things?

You get a contact, it lives there for years but they are probably out of date in no time at all and how do you know? When you try and contact that person and can't find anything that works? Why don't we have a service that you can opt in to that allows the update on contacts to be pushed to contacts? When we run a small business, we use different services based on our scale(number of users) e.g. Cloud infrastructure services but the service provider itself has no information about our scale or goals and so the onus is upon us to properly scale the required infrastructure services depending upon the number of users.

Currently we can get alerts indirectly based upon our business scale e.g. When the API query limits hits a threshold or other monitoring rules(Network, Storage, CPU etc.). But we have to set each of those rules independently and there is no central product scale based monitoring service.

I feel there is a need gap for a centralized business scale based monitoring service which can send us alerts regarding our infrastructure services when our users grow or drop and not just based on the infrastructure resources. This can help us save money on our infrastructure services and also serve our customers without any interruption by not over-commissioning or under-commissioning.

YouTube live chat on news channels are a cesspool, I'm afraid even to look at them and so the first thing I do when I visit a news channel is scroll down and click on 'HIDE CHAT'. Google doesn't allow to make this setting permanent and so I have to do this every single time.

It would be great to have a way to disable YouTube live chat selectively on different channels permanently.

If you had run any web-service and checked the logs you would have found constant barrage of logs indicating bots scanning for vulnerabilities by trying to locate PHP, Wordpress, git credentials etc.

These are annoying, consumes resources at best case scenario to actually exploiting our web-service if any vulnerability is found.

I was wondering if there was a central database of these bot IP addresses contributed by public from their logs, we could block these bots from scanning our web servers.

I had my entire local music library on Google Play Music and I enjoyed using it while it lasted. Now I don't want to face similar situation with another music service where I upload my local library, only to find the feature removed one day and to start searching for another service.

I would like a music service where I can upload my local music library, playlists to cloud and sync across devices; I want that service to do only this and not offer other online music subscriptions as then they will treat local music upload as secondary like how its happening with all major music service apps right now.

I heard from my friends and others in forums that they are willing to pay for such a service.

MKBHD a smartphone YouTuber recently published the annual The Blind Camera Test and as usual an unexpected contender wins the test like previous years. It largely comes down to image compression by the social media platforms.

I was wondering when many including myself are spending lot of money in buying a smartphone for its camera to post good quality photographs to social media, social media platform's compression defeats that purpose.

I understand that compression reduces Internet data consumption, but high speed Internet with unlimited data caps is not an issue where I live and others who are in similar circumstance might prefer a social media where photos and videos are not compressed.

I would like to support Indian manufacturers and small industries in India. So, I deliberately buy India manufactured products on ecommerce sites like Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal, Paytm Mall etc.

But finding India manufactured products on ecommerce sites in India is not a straightforward affair, I need to dig around the manufacturer to find the country of origin. Luckily, the government ordered these ecommerce sites to display the 'Country of Origin' for all items. Which they are slowly complying to, but now I have to search for Country of Origin : India in the product description of every item I'm interested in manually as these ecommerce sites do not display it at a prominent location.

I would like to find an easier way to find products with Country of Origin : India on these ecommerce sites and I have seen several others expressing similar views.

I often want to learn about some topic, from very broad (like "C# programming") to very specific (like "Source Generators in C#"). There are lots of resources about any topic (blog posts, articles, videos, courses, books, etc.) and some are good, some bad. On Google, you get results sorted by some algorithm and they may not necessary be the best for learning or suitable for your level of knowledge (e.g., beginner/advanced). Search results are just not very well curated.

I imagine there should be a site where anyone could register links to such learning resources, organize them by topics and rate them, so the best resources for the topic are selected by the community.

I know that for programming topics, there are pages on GitHub like Awesome .NET or Awesome Flutter where people create curated lists of resources about some programming language. However, I believe this should be more unified and accessible also to other areas than programming. It should be similarly open for contributions like GitHub Pull Requests but not so complex.

I use one Twitter account to follow different people of my interests, use another personal Twitter account to reply or retweet some of their tweets.

To do that each time, I have to search for that tweet I saw or received notification from one account in another account. I am looking for ways to do this seamlessly, like after clicking the reply or retweet on a tweet from one account I should be able to select my other account to complete the action.

Is there any 3rd party Twitter app which allows this? Would you like to have this feature in the Twitter app as well? I feel those who have different Twitter accounts might face the same problem.

Covid 19 has caused a lot of unemployment worldwide.

Although there are many freelancer apps out there, most of them operate based on a commission model system. By charging many poor freelancers for every single work/project they do on those platforms.

If Netflix has been so successful, by delivering extensive and diverse content, a freelancer app might succeed as well. Using similarly the same business model.

On this app: Freelancers pay a monthly fee and they can generate as much work as they can, without being ripped off on every single job they do by those bloody commissions.

It is not easy for consumers to know which movie/show is streamed by which platform (such as NetFlix or PrimeVideo). This service maintains the list of movies & shows with their platforms for easy search. For this to work, Currently, each platform lists its contents in a searchable manner, whether it is original content or third party. But if a consumer wants to locate which platform has a particular show or movie, there is no easy way (but for a generic search). This service can either do a back-to-back search on multiple platforms, parse the returned value, merge multiple responses and present to the user. Alternatively, it can maintain a local cache/catalogue.

The current way would be the use of the different framework-CLIs and copy-pasting everything together or starting with a GitHub Starter.

But instead of doing so and then adjusting everything for your current problems domain, what so you think of a visual configuration of data structures and simple ui-wireframes, which will be translated into real code files by adjustable templates. The results must be syncable.

I wish someone could figure out a way to make chrome extensions work on mobile. I know that on iOS, there are share extensions that work with apps. It would be great if there were some way chrome extensions could be turned into apps with share extensions that could be used in iOS.

For example, I use Pocket for bookmarks. I use the chrome extension on my desktop and I use the share extension when browsing on my iPhone. In an age when the majority of people are browsing websites on mobile phones, there should be a way to access great chrome extensions on mobile too.

Social Distancing or more accurately Physical Distancing is the key prevent the spread of COVID-19 before a vaccine is made available for everyone on the planet.

But since lockdowns cannot continue indefinitely due to economic reasons, countries which were in lockdown are opening up. This brings a new challenge of how to monitor and enforce social distancing when everyone is back on the roads.

CCTVs would be crucial in monitoring and enforcing social distancing in public places and in workplaces; The manual overhead in doing it is very high, fortunately if there's one thing which AI has proven itself as more capable than human beings it's computer vision.

But, since average CCTVs don't have depth perception, have different views and people are not in the same plane of axis; judging the distance between two people from video footage is a hard problem. Fortunately, Andrew Ng's company has released a tool to do just this and has released how the procedure works - https://landing.ai/landing-ai-creates-an-ai-tool-to-help-customers-monitor-social-distancing-in-the-workplace/.

It solves the problem of calculating distance by using homography to get top-down view of the image from video, using a manual calibration tool. Unfortunately, none of this has been open-sourced as of writing and hence a need gap for this to be released as an open-source tool for any govt. or workplace to make use of.

Such a tool can also be used on open CCTV feeds from Shodan, Insecam to analyse social distancing in countries around the world.

Humans are social creatures, locking them down in their houses for weeks is hard on the psychological wellbeing of many. Lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic has made the life especially dangerous for those who have been facing violence at their home in several countries.

Going out for work, school was the only recourse for many abuse victims; but now due to the lockdown, the abusers have full-time access to the victims.

French Govt. reported last week that there has been 36% increase domestic violence reports in Paris and 32% increase in the rest of the country. UK has reported 25 % increase in domestic abuse calls at the national domestic abuse helpline, their website has 150% more views compared to last week of Feb. In India, National Commission for Women (NCW) has reported a spike in the cases of domestic abuse; NCW chief has said that the number of cases are likely to be much higher but women are scared to complain as their abusers are at home.

Few countries like Italy has launched specific apps to help abuse victims register a complaint, but I feel all major apps should integrate discrete domestic abuse reporting facilities to help the victims.

Hiding the subreddit name #reddit #game

When I'm browsing the reddit, I would like to play little game of not seeing the subreddit name and guessing it from the content. It would be nice if reddit provided an option to hide the subreddit name, but it doesn't nor does any 3rd party reddit apps.

A simple search reveals that there are others who would like to hide the name of subreddit, but for different reasons. Common suggestions for it seems to be altering the css via browser extensions, but since I would like to browse reddit via mobile it doesn't seem to be a viable option.

I would like to hide it for entertainment reasons and the subreddit name should be revealed when tapped on it. Perhaps if there are other takers for this, some 3rd party reddit app may implement this or a new app can be created.

I think everything is a facade on social networks, people tend to project different picture of themselves or project as someone else whom they wish they were. I would like to have a place where I can share my thoughts as it is without the fear of judgements or prejudice from those who read it.

I want a place where I can un-censor my thoughts, At the same time I don't want the forum to be a toxic place which plagues forums which advocates anonymity and free-speech. I guess, anonymity also brings out a facade from people and makes them do something online which they don't normally do in real life.

So, I think there is a need gap for a non-toxic forum where anyone can post anything on their mind period.

Techmoan (Matthew Julius Taylor), the famous youtube retro tech reviewer has a need gap for a device which take in audio input and outputs a visualiser to a video display. His intention is to convert old black and white CRT display to audio visualisers, so device needs to connect with RF input and perhaps needs a bluetooth receiver for receiving the data.

This post explains why we should focus on validation, how needgap platform helps with it and how startup community can gain from this platform.

Startup Ideas

A successful startup idea has two main parts, a problem which needs to be solved and a solution good enough that people having the problem would pay for it. Underestimating the need to validate the problem and its solution is the top most reason for a startup to fail, as they end up building something which nobody wants.

The primary reason being, overestimating a personal idea as a startup idea without clear understanding of a problem due to cognitive biases i.e. finding a problem to fit to what we think is a great startup idea; very often it is not.

This problem is very prevalent, contributing to startup failures at a phenomenal rate yet there is no viable solution for this need-gap. Hence I am creating a platform aptly named needgap for anyone to post their need-gap for finding or creating solutions which could become viable startup products.

What does it do

The needgap platform provides a way for consumers, entrepreneurs and startups to collaborate in validating problems and solve them by executing startup ideas.

How does it work

Startup ideas, MVP can be validated only by those who need the product we're building and so needgap being a problem validation platform brings together those who build and those who need what's being built.

An entrepreneur, can submit a problem to validate it. They can participate in the discussions for creating solutions for a problem which could potentially become a startup idea (or) Submit their Minimum Viable Product(MVP) which addresses the need-gap in the comments.

A consumer, can submit a problem which does not have a solution for them and hence there exists a need-gap. They can come to needgap by searching for a solution to their problem on any search engines. Consumers who face that problem or know an existing solution for that problem can vote for the problem and discuss about it in the comments. They can click on 'I WILL PAY FOR THAT' for startup ideas or MVP in the comments to validate it.

A startup, can respond to a problem for which it has a solution or is building a solution. A startup can validate its solution to a problem by interacting directly with those who are facing the problem. A startup can find need-gaps in its own products directly from its customers and fulfill it before someone else do.

Insights through subscription provides number of visits for a particular problem, top 3 countries which tells us how many are looking for a solution and where they are from. Statistics for 'I WILL PAY FOR THAT' is shown besides the comments. Monthly insights can also be received through email.

Validation cannot happen overnight, So needgap gives you all the necessary tools for you to determine whether your problem, startup idea or MVP is validated.

Design Philosophy

The needgap platform is designed with following philosophies ,

Problems, not startup ideas are the first class citizen

Etymology

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Email

Email is used for sending password reset emails, notifications regarding user user activity such as receiving a comment for their post or reply for their comment, notifications regarding their account and occasional information about the platform and for subscription features. The notifications can be disabled in the profile settings.

Email can be removed in the profile settings, but subscription features cannot be enabled, password reset will not be possible if the user forgets their password and there will be no notifications regarding their posts or comments.

Billing Address

When subscription is enabled Billing Address is stored for tax invoice purposes as mandated by the government and for fraud prevention by payment gateway. These details are not shared with anyone else apart from the payment gateway and the tax regime.

Fraud Prevention

IP address of flagged users are stored in one-time hashed format to prevent fraudulent activities and to prevent harm to the needgap platform and our users. This data is not shared with anyone.

Please read and follow the submission guidelines to sustain the quality of the needgap platform and for the wellbeing of the community.

Philosophy

needgap was created for validating problems, startup ideas and MVP to create products which people want.

Language

English is the only supported language of the needgap platform currently. All submissions are required to be in English.

Problem Title

Do post problem, problem faced by you or the problem which you're trying to solve which doesn't have a solution and hence exists a need-gap.

It's encouraged to reduce the problem to its fundamental level in the title i.e. the problem title shouldn't be reasonably broken down further into another problem. Please use the search feature to search for a problem to check whether it has been posted earlier, if so please contribute your opinion on that problem in its comment section instead of submitting the same problem.

Post hashtags along with the problem title, representing the problem domain and the target country if its applicable only to a specific country (or) #worldwide.

Don't post startup ideas as problem title, A problem should include only the need-gap for which a solution becomes the startup idea. Solutions should be discussed only in the comment section.

Don't post jokes, memes, politics, religion, meta-discussion, drama about personalities or moderation on this platform or others. Also please don't flood the platform with submissions of your favorite thing - one post per topic should be sufficient, and respect the dupe filter.

Don't self promote in the problem section, Post your solutions in the comments and Please use the profile section to tell others about yourself.

Please be aware of the character limitations in the problem title.

Problem Description

Do explain the problem succinctly in the description section. It is encouraged to explain how the problem affects you and why the existing solutions if any doesn't work for you.

Don't post startup ideas as problem description, A problem should include only the need-gap for which a solution is needed. Possible solutions should only be discussed in the comment section.

Use the link feature to include factual sources to support your statements.

Please be aware of the character limitations in the problem description.

If You Already Have A Solution To The Problem You're Submitting

If you already have a solution for a problem you are trying to submit on needgap, you can only do so in comments and not in problem title or description. Explain the problem clearly in-detail by following the aforementioned guidelines without mentioning your product and then after submitting the problem comment explaining how you are solving that problem.

Sharing Problem

Do share your problem once submitted or other problems you find interesting to those who might face it or have some opinion on it.

Don't share the problem with your close friends and family unless they face the problem or have some opinion on it, to avoid bias in validation.

Contributing Comments

Do comment existing solutions for the problem if any exists, else discuss about possible solutions for the need-gap.

Do discuss about the viability of the solutions for a startup idea in the comments.

When commenting, please try to imagine you are in a face to face conversation with the person you are talking to or about - respect their point of view, even if you vehemently disagree with it. Comments violating the rules will be downvoted, flagged or as a last resort removed. Comments under your name will never be edited by admins, but they may be removed for spam or trolling.

Some guidelines on comments:

First, do no harm - always be thoughtful, constructive and respectful.
Do post questions, even if you feel they might be dumb ones.
Do respond positively to questions, even if you feel they are dumb.
Do be charitable - assume best intentions, and try to understand those you disagree with.
Do stay on topic.
Do try to contribute something substantial - one-word comments are rarely interesting.
Don't use 'You' in the comments unless absolutely necessary.
Don't be snarky or nasty to others.

Tagging

You can tag other users using (@Username) e.g. @Abishek and tag problems, comments using (/problems/[problem number]) e.g. /problems/93 and (/comments/[comment number] e.g. /comments/1125 .

Editing

Problems and comments can be edited only within 1 hour and 3 hours of posting respectively. When editing, you are encouraged to follow it up with the reason for the edit.

Voting

Guidelines on voting:

Do upvote problems which you face yourself and/or think that it needs to be solved by a startup.
Do upvote comments which contribute to the conversation and suggest solutions which can become startup ideas.
Do downvote negative comments and those not contributing to the conversation.
Do downvote problems or comments which doesn't follow the contributing guidelines.
Do be aware downvoting costs karma (1 point per downvote) - use it sparingly.
Don't downvote comments if you strongly disagree with them or feel they are wrong, reply to the comment on why you disagree or feel they are wrong.
Don't ask others to upvote/downvote or brigade votes, or try to downvote everything someone says.
Don't try to spam votes in any way.

Karma

Karma system is designed to sustain quality of the needgap platform.

Karma of a user is based on the points accumulated by the user in the needgap platform. The karma accumulated by the user is shown besides the user name.

Karma thresholds:

1 point or more is required for submitting comments (which is awarded when the account is created).
2 points or more are required for submitting problems (make a thoughtful comment to gain the required karma).
Greater than 2 points are required to upvote.
Greater than 10 points are required to style text in comments with formatting toolbar consisting of 7 tools.
Greater than 10 points are require to set the user profile and to display them.
Greater than 20 points are required to downvote.
Greater than 30 points are required to style text in comments with formatting toolbar consisting of 17 tools.
Greater than 50 points are required to flag.

Karma lost when using downvote:

-1 point when using downvote.

When Karma of the user becomes lesser than 1, the user looses the ability to post anything on the needgap platform.

I WILL PAY FOR THAT

When you write a thoughtful comment about a possible solution to a problem you might wish to know how many would pay for that. Now you can know that through insights as anyone can click 'I WILL PAY FOR THAT' to let you know what you need.
Visitors can click 'I WILL PAY FOR THAT' to let the comment owner know that they will pay for the solution.

Insights for 'I WILL PAY FOR THAT' will below the comments.

Note: 'I WILL PAY FOR THAT' button will not be shown to the owner of the comment(to avoid self pay), But rest assured it will be shown to others. When 'I WILL PAY FOR THAT' is clicked, it will also add a up-vote to the comment if eligible.

WHO NEEDS THIS

Get insights about a problem like how many have seen it from which countries, How many have clicked 'I WILL PAY FOR THAT' for a solution in the comments. Insights can be viewed on the needgap platform after logging in (besides the title of the problem)and also receive monthly insights through email.

When a problem is subscribed (WHO NEEDS THIS), new comments are sent to your email. Ensure that you have your email updated on your profile.

You will receive monthly insights of all subscribed problems in your email. Make sure you have your email updated in your profile and it has notifications enabled.
